ASUS M509 Review: A Practical Budget 15.6-Inch Laptop
Editor note: This article is an original English adaptation based on the source review published by Notebook-Center.ru.
Overview
The ASUS M509 is positioned as an entry-level all-rounder for everyday work, study, and home use. The reviewed configuration combines an AMD Ryzen 3 3200U processor, 8 GB of DDR4 memory, and a 512 GB SSD, which gives this model a practical hardware base for routine tasks. This version ships with Free DOS instead of a preinstalled Windows system, so buyers need to set up the operating system themselves.
In simple terms, the M509 aims to offer a familiar 15.6-inch format, a useful port selection, and solid day-to-day responsiveness at a budget price. Its strongest point is the balance between SSD storage, memory, and basic AMD performance. The main compromise is the entry-level chassis and screen technology.

Design
The ASUS M509 uses a fully plastic chassis and is offered in silver and black in the reviewed version, with other color options also mentioned in the source material. The light surfaces should be more practical than darker finishes when it comes to visible fingerprints. At 1.8 kg, the laptop stays portable enough for a standard 15.6-inch model.
The weak point is build quality. The lid can bend under pressure, and the chassis is described as less rigid than better-built alternatives. The hinge can hold the display in place and allows one-hand opening, but overall this is still a budget construction first and foremost.
Display and Audio
The notebook has a 15.6-inch matte Full HD display with a 60 Hz refresh rate and thin bezels. The anti-glare finish is a practical advantage for work in bright rooms. At the same time, the panel uses TN technology, so viewing angles are limited. The source also notes modest brightness of around 200 cd/m2, low contrast, and only moderate color reproduction.
Audio is one of the more pleasant surprises here. The two speakers with SonicMaster support are not especially loud, but the sound is described as balanced and free from obvious vibration at maximum volume. The VGA webcam is basic and works best only when external lighting is good enough.
Keyboard and Touchpad
ASUS uses a familiar island-style keyboard layout with closely spaced keys and a reduced arrow-key block. On the positive side, the keyboard includes a numeric pad, 1.4 mm key travel, and LED backlighting, which is not always guaranteed in this price class. The overall typing experience is described as comfortable for daily use.
The touchpad is large and responsive across both the center and the corners. It supports Windows gestures, and the integrated mouse buttons are said to press smoothly and quietly. For routine office work and navigation, the input devices should be one of the stronger parts of the M509.
Performance
The reviewed ASUS M509DA-BQ242 configuration uses the dual-core AMD Ryzen 3 3200U with Radeon RX Vega 3 integrated graphics, paired with 8 GB of DDR4-2400 memory and a 512 GB SSD. That combination makes the laptop suitable for common everyday workloads such as web use, office work, media playback, and general home tasks.
The SSD is especially important here because it gives the system faster everyday responsiveness than many cheaper hard-drive-based laptops. Buyers should still keep expectations realistic: this is an entry-level machine, but the specification is sensible for users who want basic work capacity without paying for a more expensive platform.
Ports and Battery
The port layout covers the essentials. The left side carries the charging connector, USB Type-C, HDMI, and USB 3.1, while the right side adds two USB 2.0 ports, a microSD card reader, the combo audio jack, and a Kensington lock slot. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1.
Battery capacity is 32 Wh from a 2-cell lithium-ion unit. According to the source review, that is enough for around six hours of web browsing and for watching a couple of films on the road. In practice, battery life looks acceptable for light use, but it is not a standout feature.
Verdict
The ASUS M509 is a straightforward budget laptop for undemanding users who want a full-size screen, useful everyday performance, and SSD storage without moving into a higher price tier. Its best qualities are the practical hardware mix, comfortable keyboard, and complete everyday connectivity. The compromises are equally clear: average build quality, a basic TN display, and modest battery capacity.
For buyers who understand those limits, the M509 makes sense as a simple home, study, or office machine rather than a premium multimedia notebook.
