Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2021) review: powerful M1 Pro performance in a durable 16-inch chassis
Editor note: This article is an original English adaptation of a Notebook-Center.ru review, prepared by Notebook Center for practical reading.
Overview
The Apple MacBook Pro 16 (Z14W0007C) is aimed at professional workloads such as photo and video editing, coding, and heavy multitasking. In this configuration, it uses the Apple M1 Pro platform, 32 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 2 TB SSD. The aluminum body feels rigid and premium, while the 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display is the main highlight for media and creative work.
The strengths are clear: high overall responsiveness, excellent screen quality, strong speakers, and very good battery capacity. The main compromises are the lack of internal upgrades, a glossy panel that may not suit all users, and display behavior details such as slow response time and PWM sensitivity for some people.

Design and Build
This is a large laptop at 2.15 kg, with a 356x248x17 mm footprint. The unibody aluminum construction feels very solid in daily handling, with stable hinges and minimal flex in the lid and keyboard deck. The lid can be opened with one hand, and the maximum opening angle is around 135 degrees. Space Gray and Silver finishes both hide fingerprints and dust reasonably well.
For users who keep laptops for many years, serviceability is limited: internal component upgrades are not available, and practical maintenance is mostly fan cleaning after opening the bottom cover.
Display, Audio, and Webcam
The 16.2-inch Mini-LED panel (3456x2234, 255 ppi) delivers sharp detail and rich color for creative workloads. According to the source measurements, brightness around 500 nits is typical in standard scenarios, while the higher 1000 nits figure applies to HDR content. Reported color coverage is 100% sRGB and 88% AdobeRGB.
For entertainment and communication, the six-speaker system is a strong point with good volume and balance, and the 1080p webcam provides a clear image for calls. One caution: the display response time is slow for gaming use, and PWM may bother users with sensitive eyes.
Keyboard, Touchpad, and Performance
The keyboard uses a familiar Apple layout without a numpad, with clear key feedback and effective backlighting control. Touch ID is integrated at the top-right of the keyboard area. The large touchpad remains one of the easiest to use in this class, with reliable gesture tracking across the full surface.
In real work, the M1 Pro platform handles heavy multitasking smoothly, including concurrent creative apps, browser tabs, and communication tools. With 32 GB RAM and a 2 TB SSD, this configuration offers enough headroom for demanding workflows and large local project files.
Ports, Connectivity, and Battery Behavior
Port selection is practical: SD card reader, HDMI, and Thunderbolt 4 on the right side; two more Thunderbolt 4 ports, a combined audio jack, and MagSafe 3 charging on the left. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.
The 99.6 Wh battery is a key advantage. In the source test, web browsing at 150 nits was close to 17 hours, while maximum brightness reduced runtime to roughly 8 hours. During common office and media tasks, chassis temperatures stayed comfortable, and fan noise remained low except under sustained heavy load.
Verdict
The MacBook Pro 16 (2021) in this configuration is a strong professional notebook for users who value display quality, stable performance, speaker quality, and long battery endurance in one machine. It is best suited to creators and developers who need sustained performance and a large, high-quality screen.
The trade-offs are clear before purchase: high price, no internal upgrade path, and a display profile that is excellent for creative quality but less ideal for fast gaming and some eye-sensitive users. If those limits are acceptable, this model remains a practical premium choice.
